Making Places: creating sustainable communities

A teacher guide to sustainable communities

The guide is a practical resource for Key Stage 3 (11-14), which introduces teachers to sustainable communities, provides them with an understanding of the careers involved in sustainable communities and the generic skills which underpin sustainable communities.

  • Section one will help to further an understanding of sustainable communities and provide real life case studies where young people have played an active role in shaping where they live.
  • In section two teachers can find out about the career opportunities involved in sustainable communities and how students can access these occupations.
  • Section three explores the generic skills (The Egan Review, Skills for Sustainable Communities, 2004) needed to build sustainable communities.
  • Section four provides further advice and information on a host of partners who are helping to deliver sustainable communities.

Throughout the guide there are practical tips and ideas for activities such as role plays, topics for debate, projects and competitions that teachers can use to encourage students to take part in creating sustainable communities.
