Why was ASC created?
In 2004, the Egan Review highlighted a range of issues that hindered the creation of lasting communities - and in some cases actually contributed to their failure:
- Too many professionals involved in shaping communities were working in isolation from one another.
- Where they did communicate, there were sometimes gaps in the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to make the partnership really work.
- Examples of good practice that did exist were often not shared or even identified, so crucial opportunities to learn from the past were lost.
- We lacked enough people across the professions - architecture, planning, housing and transport.
- We lacked people with generic skills such as communication, project management and community engagement.
The Government called for a culture change where different disciplines worked together, took a long-term view and shared skills and information about the best ways of transforming local places.
We are the Government's national body set up to lead this culture change and promote the creation of sustaiable communities across the country.
